2008 Beijing Olympic Torch Relay

So I finished two midterms on Tuesday and I immediately resumed my life style as a carefree senior infected with senioritis. After my midterm, I discovered that my lab on Wednesday - the only class I have that day - was cancelled. So I decided to go to SF to see the 2008 Beijinj Olympic torch relay. Many of you probably have already heard about what happened in Paris during the torch relay. There were lots of protests aiming at China's human right policy and so on... and things got nasty when some protestors tried to stop the torch relay with different ways. As a result, SF today was under heavily guarded.

Katrina, Grace, and I first went to AT&T park, which is supposed to be the starting point of the relay. The place was already packed with many people, including  protestors, when we arrived. The relay was schedule to begin at 1pm, but we waited for at least 30 minutes and we didn't see any torch. We kept hearing rumors that the torch has been relocated. Eventually, we became impatient and we started heading to other part of the torch route, hoping that we can catch the torch bearer along the way. After many minutes of futile search, we decided to get lunch. However, after lunch, we were told by one of the security guard that the relay was already over. It turned out that the torch bearer was secretly escorted to a "neighboring" place to begin the relay. Sigh... that ruined my day.

I was devastated because I have always wanted to see the torch in person, or even carried it one day. Unfortunately, non e of that happens today, and it may never happen in the future, since the Olympic organization is thinking about cancel the relay in the future to prevent protests. Instead, I spent 6 hours of my life doing nothing. Actually that's not true, although I didn't see the torch, I walked so much (in order to find the torch) that I was sort of relaying, so I guess I accomplished something at least.

So this is what I did after I got back to my place.

I made a paper version of the Olympic torch that looks exactly like the official torch. It's actually quite fun to make stuffs like this and I highly recommend everyone to try... Fun for the entire family! Anyway, I guess things aren't as bad as I thought - I not only saw the torch, but also got to carry it around, although it's just a paper torch! Well whatever makes me happy will do :)
